Mustafa Centre

Mustafa Centre, the 24 hr department store in Little India, Singapore, which sells everything from household products to electronic items to garments is well know for its wide variety of products and bargain prices. Especially when it comes to electronics, just a few days back I picked up a 4th Gen iPod Nano for $222 when at all other retail stores it's available at $248. I prefer it to the notorious Sim Lim, a well known electronic mall here, where one can find good deals but need to bargain and be careful not to be cheated. Only yesterday the Straits Times had a news item with the headline Sim Lim hit by complaints which stated that complaints against stores there had risen by 30 percent last year for the fifth consecutive year. If you plan on going to Mustafa try and avoid public holidays since it is bound to be extremely crowded and pick pockets are known to be on the prowl on such days.

Chingay Parade 2009

Yesterday, I went with a few friends to the Chingay parade. It was my first time even though I have lived in Singapore for the past 3 years now. We were debating between buying tickets and trying to get a free show, finally deciding on the latter. We found a pretty good spot, right in front of Mandarin Oriental hotel/Marina Square, next to the seating area. In some ways we might have been better off then the ticket holders since we managed to get up close and personal with the performers some of whom were handing out ang pao.

Below are a few of the pictures we managed to take.

Botanic Garden

Yesterday we decided to go to the Botanic Garden to spend the day. Got to see some interesting landscaping and a wide variety of plantation. I might not have been able to fully appreciate the many species of exotic plants since I don't have much knowledge about these things. In spite of this I had a enjoyable time and its a great place for an evening jog if you live in the vicinity.
In addition to the greenery you are also likely to see a number of couples there to take wedding photographs. In case you are not aware it is common practice in Singapore for couples to take photographs at various landmarks around the city state for their wedding albums all dressed up in their wedding suits and gowns which can be quite a spectacle.

Singapore Dreaming

Last night I went to watch the movie Singapore Dreaming, with my old flatmates. It was quite entertaining and at the same time informative since I am not Singaporean. I would highly recommend it to those people who would like to get some insight into life on the island.
